The Story Of Highveld

Highveld Primary School was founded on 3 August 1937 as Hill Extension School with 75 pupils. Miss J. Dixon was the first Acting Principal. By 1939, Mr. J. Holmes became Principal, followed by Mr. H. Dent in 1944, who led the school to an enrollment of 545. The H.P. Dent Hall was opened in 1965. Mr. Dent retired in 1965, and Mr. Geyser took over, followed by Mr. G.L. Higgs in 1967. Under his leadership, the school’s name changed to Highveld Primary in 1970, and several facilities, including tennis courts, a swimming pool, and new classrooms, were added.

Mr. Higgs left in 1974, and Mr. A.P. Malan became Principal for 8 years. After his retirement, Mrs. Fundudis became Principal, overseeing refurbishments and an enrollment of 720 in 1984. In 1990, the new media center was completed. Mrs. Fundudis retired in 1997, and Mrs. Karen Warder became Principal. Significant upgrades occurred, including new facilities and equipment.

By 2010, enrollment reached 880, with additional support staff employed. After Mrs. Warder’s retirement in 2015, Mrs. Douwie was appointed Acting Principal and later became the official Principal in 2016, with an enrollment of 941.
